How Dot built a label community of collectors, artists, and producers on Sound
Dot is an artist from Sun Valley, Idaho. She joined Sound in March of 2022 with her genesis drop “Fever Dream,” generating 2.5 ETH off of 25 editions. To date, she’s released 25 songs, and has appeared on five tracks, including a drop with music curator group NOISE DAO.
In addition to her solo career, she also created a record label/community of artists and producers called Portal Music. Portal Music has released one mixtape so far with music from 14 other artists. That one was curated by Dot herself. Read more about the mixtape at the bottom of this email.
Her success on Sound was due to her all around community minded approach as a collector, collaborator, and artist. Here’s what she had to say about her experience:
“Web3 has unlocked so many levels of creative freedom that I haven’t felt since I first started producing music over a decade ago. Beyond the funding opportunities it provides, releasing music onchain has also shifted my goals back into alignment with what truly matters to me as an artist. This technology carries a sense of permanence that shifts my focus from short term trends to aiming to create timeless music. I don’t feel as driven to strive for traditional music industry metrics of success as a means of survival, and by regaining control over the price of my music, I’ve had a chance to heal some of my beliefs around the value of my work.”
Across all of her drops on Sound, she’s generated over 32 ETH in sales volume. She also has reached over 8.6K collectors, thanks in part due to her latest track, “Sisu,” which was featured in the Coinbase Quest where you can earn 5 OP for collecting it on Sound.
Takeaways from Dot’s Success
Dot has been developing her Web3 strategy for over two years, consistently releasing music on Sound and collaborating with other artists. She’s also been featured in a variety of playlists on Sound.
Her success came from connecting with all of these different community members and curators to cultivate a community that people wanted to be a part of surrounding the music. She’s also supported other artists by collecting their music and accumulating a library of 76 collected Sounds.
You can copy her strategy by connecting with artists, producers, collectors and curators in the Sound community and working with them to create a community built around your music.

Breaking Artist: Tools for Modern Life
Tools for Modern Life is a new project from Mykel Online. If you’ve been active on Sound, you’re probably already familiar. It’s seemingly taken over the charts overnight. All five tracks from the debut collection “001 - transit” have had their moment to shine on the Viral Chart. In just a week, the project has already seen 1K mints and has reached over 750 collectors. Here’s what Mykel said about his experience dropping on the project Sound:
“For a long time, I thought about ways that I could bring bring quality music products to the world, with no strings attached, as frequently as I want to. Tools opened that creative channel for me. I love the flow of creating these themed, instrumental-based mini-projects, drawing up some dope art for the collection, and immediately getting it out to a network of my most dedicated fans at the click of a button. It’s the most rewarding version of a release cycle that I’ve ever experienced, even after doing considerably well on the web2 side. Releasing onchain just hits different.“
Check out all five tracks in order on his playlist “001 - transit.“
