Interview with VALÉ
Naomie: Give us a little introduction!
VALE: I am a 20-year-old singer songwriter from Barranquilla, Colombia and I started making music actually exactly 5 years ago when I was 15, so that's pretty tight
Naomie: And what are you working on at the moment?
VALE: Well, I just finished doing these cool live shows, and now my plan is to make music for next year. This year the plan and layout that I had was just very efficient- we decided to write and record all the songs at the end of 2022 and just had them like ready to go. We didn't have to wait for the song to be mastered or whatever it was just all done, all there, all ready! So that's what I wanna do for next year as well, I'm gonna be working on songs till November-ish and yeah getting everything ready for 2024!
Naomie: What did you wanna be when you were growing up?
VALE: At first I wanted to be a vet, but then I wanted to be a chef really bad. My grandfather taught me how to cook, and I loved it so much. Cue to MasterChef Junior- I was like "Yep that's me". I created an Instagram account called valejuniorchef, that is still roaming out there. Still bummed I never made it on the show.
Naomie: Somehow the idea of you in masterchef junior at age 10 makes such perfect sense to me..
VALE: Right? But then I on the side I just loved music so much. I was in the school choir from age 6 to 11- there's videos of me since age 4 just singing and dancing- but it's never something I thought it was possible. Obviously every little girl want to be like Hannah Montana, I just never thought it could be me.
Naomie: You have a lot of Spanish elements in your music as well- how do you walk the line to keep that balance while also staying true to your roots?
VALE: Well, it's been a process but slowly have been trying to incorporate more and more Spanish into my songs, I've been really getting better at going in and out of it. It's good for me to work with people that didn't grow up in the same environment or necessarily speak Spanish fluently. Adds a good balance. Like of course The Fund knew about reggaeton, but i'm sure after we started working together they started diving a little deeper to make it a little more authentic, and that always offers a fresh perspective along with it. It's cool to see them take on latin music. That's why I think its so unique! Cause it's not like explicitly latin, its kind of like a cool latin-pop-alternative mix. A hybrid!
Naomie: you have achieved so much in such a short time. What are some of your short term goals versus long-term?
VALE: Short term, I would love to hop on a tour is an opener! That is my top priority right now because I found that I have a lot of strength performing live- and I still have a long way to go, but I've seen that this is what connects with people the most so far, so just want to lean into that. Long term I really want to work on like an EP or album. I feel like I write just having in mind that we're going to do the songs as singles and not as a full length, so I'm interested in seeing what would happen if I wrote having a project in mind. I don't know if that’s short term or long term- I feel like it might be more long-term for me but I really want to do that.
Naomie: I was at your show with Sara Phillips, Tarot, and Caly at Moroccan Lounge! You guys all crushed it. Do you have a favorite show you've played recently?
VALE: I mean that show was incredible, it was the best night but there was actually one that I did in San Diego for sofar sounds that was really nice. The weather was perfect, it was on a rooftop with a gorgeous view and everyone was like paying attention, clapping and singing along. Those moments are always really special when it feels like you just connect with a crowd. Shoutout sofar sounds for that one!
I also loved the show I just played at the regent opening for Luna Luna, which was the biggest show I've played so far- there were like 700 people! Feel like I've come a long way since my first show a year ago, I remember being so scared and now it's one of my favorite things to do!
Naomie: You've been a really consistent name on Sound and built a truly dedicated collector base over time- what do you feel like sound.xyz has helped you to unlock in your career?
VALE: I think it’s cool to be able to own your music. To own your project. I mean, I've always made that a priority in my five years of doing music. Independence is important to me. I’ve seen artists that haven't done that from the start and they suffer the consequences later on, so it's good to try maintain ownership as long as you can. Sound gives me that leverage. I also just like being able to give back to the people that actually spend money on my music- the people who really support me. Sound has given me a way to know who is here first. To be able to connect with those people in other ways instead of just being like “I’ll follow you on Instagram” or “I’ll like your comment on TikTok” or whatever. It's just a bit more meaningful I think, and everyone wins.
Naomie: Who are some of your favorite artists on sound? It’s awesome to see you guys all become friends
VALE: I mean there’s so many people actually but I would say Sara Phillips, Tarot, Caly Bevier, Annika, Max pretends- he's dope, TK, alec King.. Just so many people! It’s really easy to make friends with all the events that go on, it’s a pretty small community as of now so you just get to know everyone which I love
